Medieval Video Games Get Real

November 19th, 2007

I play Medieval Role Playing games and I really enjoy them. But, these kinds of games take real liberties with the whole idea of reality in that all the rules are broken. In a fight and your health getting low? Take a health potion and problem solved. Need a quick ride across the lands? Hop on your dragon mount and off you go. These games all take a heavy slant toward the fantasy of the genre.

Ever wonder what a game would be like if it took a heavy slant toward the reality of the genre? Did you ever wonder if there was a game that really took things in a more realistic approach? Well there is a new medieval role playing game out that does just that! And it is quite amazing. It is called Mount & Blade and here is a video of some game play

They have the philosophy of try before you buy so you can download the game and give it a try totally for free before you buy it.

Some other nice features of the game are a really nice mounted combat system which is something not to be had in other games. And of course it has a full suite of mod capabilities so you can go right ahead and design your own games.

It just seems to me to be a refreshing change from the whole host of medieval RPG games that are out there.

Why I love to play Warcraft

May 22nd, 2007

playing warcraftSomebody asked me why I, as an adult like to play a video game- Warcraft in particular.  The answer to that is rather easy and I didn’t even skip a beat. My answer was “Ashbringer”. Huh, he replied?

Explaining Ashbringer will help you to understand how warcraft fits perfectly into this blog called “Heroic Dreams”.

Warcraft, if you are not familiar with it is a medieval style game. You can be a warlock, warrior, rogue, mage, dwarf, elf etc. etc. And of course there are the quests which I love so much and which make warcraft different. The game is loaded with all kinds of great quests where you have to accomplish things, solve riddles, overcome obstacles, and well do all kinds of things. Some quests are easy and some are downright near impossible. But there is one quest above all and it is the mysterious quest for the legendary sword called Ashbringer. This is the weapon above all weapons and the game only hints at it. There are little clues that pique  your curiosity.

Ashbringer is the quest above all quests, it is the dream of heroes so can you see why I love warcraft? Sitting at home, on the computer you can feel just a little bit like Percival chasing after the holy grail.

Sideways about warcraft - It was out for quite a while and it never interested me. I thoughth it was just a vicious blood bath of pvp action. hence the name warcraft. But it isn’t. It’s an extraordinarily rich world full of things that will just amaze you. And if you don’t like pvp you never ever have to encounter it.

I’m so serious about my warcraft that I built my own virtual reality pod to play in. You can see the project on my other website here: The Warcraft Pod

The movie 300 has sparked a lot of interest in the Spartans and in the whole genre of the Roman era including Gladiators.
