A little Bit of Medieval Music from the 16th Century
December 5th, 2006Looking for a new piece of classical guitar music to play I stumbled across this beautiful composition. It was written in the 16th century by Galileo’s Dad and it is quite remarkable. When you listen to this piece you can picture life in the 16th century. I see a beautiful Italian castle, there is a banquet hall and a lot of people are dressed in their finest and dancing to candle light.
This piece really evokes a feel of the middle ages. It was originally written for the lute and this is an arrangement for guitar.
It is called Saltarello and a Saltarello was a medieval three step dance that we have long forgotten how to do. It is thought that it was two steps and a hop. But we can only guess at this. Instructions for the dance have been lost in time, but some of the music remains.
