I have been getting a lot of emails and a lot of messages from people asking me how the mead making is going. The thought occurred to me that while I have been very busy posting lots of stuff about mead making on my website I haven’t posted much about it at all here on my blog.
Well, the mead making has been going great and I have quite a few batches going with supplies coming in for even more. This picture is a look at my new born meadery in the spare room. I can’t use the chalkboard for brainstorming anymore but it’s worth the sacrifice.

Anyway, I have some delicious meads fermenting including a fantastic Raspberry that is out of this world. I also have a pumpkin Mead that is developing well. I am not a big fan of pumpkin so I was really shocked at how delicious it is turning out to be. The pumpkin didn’t overwhelm it. I also have an orange cinnamon that is turning out delicious.
Making Mead very much reminds me of that Tom Petty song “The Waiting is the Hardest Part” and it is fitting because mead making requires a lot of patience. It is typical for a good mead to take several months before you can start tasting it and two or three years to age before it gets really good.
I have learned a lot about mead over the past several months and I am continuing to make it and learn more. If you are interested in making your own mead I have complete tutorials on it on my website here: The Mead Nerd
Don’t pay attention to the mermaid in the picture :) Looks like I won’t be able to work on that for a while (I can’t reach over the mead table) . Maybe I will just name my little operation The Mermaid Meadery.

I had a big weekend this past few days - not just watching patriots football but also working on my mead. I had a goal to get a nice batch completed by christmas so I could give them away as presents and they are done!
So what I have is a very nice batch of a dry mead that I made myself, labeled and even waxed. These are going to make a great present to my friends and family. It just goes beyond the buying of gifts because I spent a lot of time and brewed up this mead myself. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment and it is really something quite unique. Going to be a real conversation piece at some christmas parties.
Because it is for christmas I am adding mulling spice packages to the gifts so we can heat up the mead and mull it in some delicious holiday spices.
Anyhoo, it is way too late to make yourself some mead for this christmas but if you are interested in making mead which is a delicious wine made from honey rather than grapes you can check out my website on how to do it. Making Mead the easy and delicious way
As a side note: This has turned into so much fun for me that I am developing it into a small business. I have formed a legal partnership, gotten my tax id number and am moving forward with producing mead as a legitimate consumer project. Going to be a lot of fun and the name of the company is “Round Table Mead”.

Yesterday was a big football day and everything revolved around the Patriots game but we still scheduled a meeting of the mead club and we made our first adventure into the world of exotic and flavored meads. Before the game and then a bit during half time we mixed up four batches of mead and they look really promising. I think they are going to be quite delicious.
The four gallon sizes in the front of the picture are the new batches and from left to right they are Sweet Raspberry Mead, Vanilla Metheglyn, Pumpkin Mead, and Ancient Orange. The assortment of colors really give an autumn feel to the meadery.
We used a variety of different yeasts including one batch with Fleischmann’s yeast which can be bought in any grocery store. That particular batch is bubbling away which tells us that the yeast is very active and quick to grow.
