Dude, Hows the Mead going?

February 8th, 2008

I have been getting a lot of emails and a lot of messages from people asking me how the mead making is going. The thought occurred to me that while I have been very busy posting lots of stuff about mead making on my website I haven’t posted much about it at all here on my blog.

Well, the mead making has been going great and I have quite a few batches going with supplies coming in for even more. This picture is a look at my new born meadery in the spare room. I can’t use the chalkboard for brainstorming anymore but it’s worth the sacrifice.

My meadery

Anyway, I have some delicious meads fermenting including a fantastic Raspberry that is out of this world. I also have a pumpkin Mead that is developing well. I am not a big fan of pumpkin so I was really shocked at how delicious it is turning out to be. The pumpkin didn’t overwhelm it. I also have an orange cinnamon that is turning out delicious.

Making Mead very much reminds me of that Tom Petty song “The Waiting is the Hardest Part” and it is fitting because mead making requires a lot of patience. It is typical for a good mead to take several months before you can start tasting it and two or three years to age before it gets really good.

I have learned a lot about mead over the past several months and I am continuing to make it and learn more. If you are interested in making your own mead I have complete tutorials on it on my website here: The Mead Nerd

Don’t pay attention to the mermaid in the picture :) Looks like I won’t be able to work on that for a while (I can’t reach over the mead table) . Maybe I will just name my little operation The Mermaid Meadery.
