Gladiators, Knights, and Quarterbacks: A thought on turkey day
November 23rd, 2006Thanksgiving is a great day, you feast with family on lots of great food then sit back the rest of the day and watch football! It doesn’t get much better than that! And it makes me think about the history of the warrior.
For pretty much all of recorded history we have been gathering together as humans and rooting for our heroes. It is a very human thing to do and it is a very enjoyable part of the human experience. A time long ago it was the gladiators, then throughout the middle ages it was the knights in the jousting arena and now? Now it is still the same! Our gladiators still don their armor and gather together on the gridiron to battle it out to see who is stronger and faster and smarter - and to see who will win. The setting has changed and the arena is shaped differently but the goal is still the same: man vs. man, team vs. team, gladiator vs. gladiator, and quarterback vs. quarterback; and let the best team win.
It doesn’t get much better than this! football is a little bit of epic fantasy in the modern world - I guess that’s why I love football so much.
As I sip on some eggnog and watch the cowboys vs. bucs I wish you and your famlly a happy thanksgiving!
