The art of hand crafting English Longbows

November 22nd, 2009

Hand made english longbows

I got an email from a gentleman who hand crafts his own English Longbows. He sells them and has a website (BowLegend.com).  It struck me how beautiful these bows are. And it is great to see an almost lost art is not lost at all. Archery is a very vibrant hobby that many people still enjoy but the art of the medieval longbow is something special. These bows are made from sapwood hickory which might possibly be the strongest hardwood on the planet. Anyway, he has some interesting stuff including pictures of bows in various stages of being crafted. And did you ever heard of tillering? It’s a technique for bow making.

I may just get me one of these bows and the one on the far right (the green ones) are called “The Greenleaf” and they are my favorite. The color scheme, shape, and design make them look very elven.
