Labyrinth

Labyrinth is one of those movies that you can never forget. It is now twenty years old. (released in 1986) And it stars the then teenage Jennifer Connelly as a teenage girl who wishes that her baby brother would be kidnapped by the Goblin King. Of course the baby brother is kidnapped by the king (Played by David Bowie). And Jennifer must travel through the labyrinth to rescue him. Labyrinth (Collector’s Edition Boxed Set)

This movie was a collaboration between Jim Henson and George Lucas and it is a one of a kind treat full of extremely rich visual sleight of hand feats that trick the eye and draw you into a labyrinth. The final scene, where Jennifer finds her kidnapped baby brother takes place in a three dimensional labyrinth of stairs where the characters walk upside down, sideways and right side up.

It is a direct homage to the artist Escher and it is one of those rare visuals in hollywood that can never be forgotten. See this Escher print and others at AllPosters.com

Even though this movie is aimed at childred (There are a few dance and song scenes) it is a wonderful treat for all ages. If you haven’t seen it in a few years you should run out and rent it! You will be pleasantly surprised. It makes a great night of escape into a wonderful world. Five stars.
